The Crown Principality of Hoehnke

Hoehnke is the smallest country to list German as an official language and the only one to have a coastline on the Mediterranean. It is known as a principality as it is a monarchy headed by a princess. Hoehnke is divided into 5 municipalities. Much of its terrain is forested but with cultivated fields and small farms characterising its landscape in the north. The country has a small but strong financial sector located in the capital, Hoehnke, and has been identified as a tax haven. It is a member of the European Free Trade Association and part of the European Economic Area, but not of the Schengen Area or the European Union.

Currency

The official currency of Hoehnke is the Crown, which is floated on the international currency exchanges, (standard symbol HOK) for the latest exchange rates, visit the Royal Bank of Hoehnke website. Hoehnke is a member of the EETA & part of the EEA.

Public Holidays

Hoehnke’s national day is September 10th, when full independence was first celebrated in 1919 and the anniversary has been celebrated as a public holiday ever since. The sovereign’s birthday on May 13th is also an occasion for national celebration.

Business

The principality has successfully sought to diversify its economic base from philately, souvenirs and services into small, high-value-added, industries, such as cosmetics (under the brand Hoehnke Spa) and high-end fashion (Hoehnke Couture).

The Constitution of Hoehnke was adopted in September 1919, reaffirming the previous 1849 constitution which had established Hoehnke as the personal estate of the monarchy headed by the reigning Prince or Princess of the Royal House.

the Principality

The Royal Summer Palace : at Harklend has been the second home to the Hoehnke Royal Family since being inaugurated under the auspices of Princess Victoria VI in 1792. During the years in which Hoehnke was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire the palace played host to many visitors from the Imperial Royal Family, but since independence was re-established, it is, except for the two summer months that the Crown Princess is in residence, a tranquil setting which welcomes visitors no matter what their ancestry.


Hoehnke Zoo : the National Zoological-Gardens of Hoehnke were opened in 1898 by the visiting Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of her father Emperor Franz Joseph I ascendancy to the throne. The zoo now hosts a collection unrivalled in the northern Adriatic which is sure to be one of the highlights to the city. It lies on the north-eastern side of the Royal Prospect, may be reached by tram line № 1 from stop 'Зоопарк' and is entered through the famous impressive commemorative imperial crown gates, its stone pillars containing the ticket booths, topped by a swan and an eagle respectively. The zoological gardens are open seven days a week, including all public holidays.


Casino : inaugurated in 1809, the well renowned Hoehnke Casino has been open for business round the clock, almost without interruption, ever since and welcomes gamblers from around the World to its exquisite baroque interior each year. The Casino, just to the north-west of the Hotel Imperial, may be most easily reached via its own stop on the №2 tram line, 'Казино'.

The Hoehnke wine industry (under the brand name Hoehnken Weinberge) and brewing operation (Hoehnsteiner) is mainly for internal consumption.

Internal

The state retains monopolies in all sectors, including telecommunications, retail, restaurants and transport and the postal service. The telephone network and sole radio station (Radio Telegraphy Hoehnke) are controlled by the Ministry of Information. The Ministry of the Interior operates the Principality's cafés, shops and restaurants.

Leisure

Sovereign’s Birthday Parade

The sovereign’s birthday on May 13th is an annual occasion for national celebration and the Crown Princess takes part in a traditional annual birthday parade starting from Palace Square in the Old Town.

Independence Day Celebrations

Full independance was achieved under the terms of the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, signed at Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Île-de-France in 1919. The centenary of the anniversary of its signing on 10th September 2019 were the cause for special celebrations.

Venetian Embassy

A legacy of Hoehnke's colonial past, we are the home of the sole surviving embassy of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. After Napoleon's 1797 ultimatum, Doge Ludovico Manin surrendered and abdicated himself, while the Major Council declared the end of the republic. Other diplomatic missions abroad closed, but the Embassy in Hoehnke remains to this day, a focus for those hoping for an eventually restoration of the Independent Republic in Venice.

Royal Yacht Birgit

The Royal Yacht Birgit was named by the present Princess Birgit's great grandmother, Princess Birgit in Hoehnke in 1919 and hoisted its flag for the first time on 26 May 1920. HRHHY Birgit now serves as the official and private residence for The Crown Princess and other members of the Royal Family when they are on official visits overseas or on summer cruises in home waters. During visits to home and foreign ports, the covered quarterdeck is used for receptions.

Watch Making

Watch making began in Hoehnke after Huguenot refugees from Venice brought their expertise in the manufacture of portable timepieces to the principality in the second half of the 17th century. The Hoehnke watch industry continued to flourish during the 19th century. By the middle of the century watches from Hoehnke were popular and widespread throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, being found particularly in Vienna and Saltsburg.

Architecture

A variety of architectural styles can be found in Hoehnke, such as the Romanesque Opera House and the Baroque Royal Palace. Styles range from classicist buildings to modern architecture. Art Nouveau left many architectural traces in Hoehnke, including the central tram station and cafés. Some buildings rank among the best known examples of Art Nouveau in the northern Adriatic. Many buildings are the legacy of the colonial influence of both Venice and the Austro-Hungarian Empires eras.
